Fundación Pachamama is launching “Cine Amazónico,” a film festival showing a selection of human rights documentaries to indigenous communities in Ecuador throughout the months of February and March 2012.
The festival was created to educate the Ecuadorian Amazon communities of Puyo, Zamora Chinchipe, Coca and Macas about human rights, and facilitate information that can help them exercise their rights.
All the screenings are free and will be followed by a forum of specialists, so if you are or will be in Ecuador in February or March 2012, join them at:
- Puyo, on February 11, 12 or 13th
- Zamora Chinchipe, on February 23, 24 or 25th
- Coca, on March 4 or 5th
- Macas, on March 6 or 17th
Fundación Pachamama will also host a special screening for junior and senior year high school students in every city, followed by a workshop to provide them with the context they usually lack.

Movies that Matter Sponsors
“Cine Amazónico” is sponsored by Movies that Matter, a Dutch organization affiliated with Amnesty International. Fundación Pachamama also found instrumental in-kind support from other highly committed local organizations.
New Publications Will Accompany the Festival
The inauguration of the festival will honor the Ecuadorian day of the Amazon and will include the release of two new publications:
- A report coordinated by Fundación Pachamama on territory rights and territory self-government by the Red Jurídica Amazónica.
- The history of land titling throughout the ancestral territories of the South-Central Amazon, coordinated in partnership with the Centro Lianas.
What’s Next for the Film Festival
Fundación Pachamama already has plans to replicate the film festival at universities in Quito - a stepping-stone to further elevate the awareness of the indigenous rights of the peoples of the Amazon among youth.
