Jungle Mamas trained birth attendants will soon have the opportunity to take part in an in depth workshop aimed at strengthening family health in the south central basin of Ecuador’s Amazon.
After successfully decreasing the basic health risks women and newborns experience at birth in Achuar territory, our indigenous partners requested of us a more hands-on course that could take their acting safe birth attendants role to a new level.
And so an increasingly sophisticated and culturally adequate curriculum for the Achuar covering practical techniques for pre-natal, during birth, birth complications, and post-partum care emerged after months of research, complementing the initial curriculum delivered by Jungle Mamas. The curriculum will also train participants in pedagogical techniques, so that they can teach others in their communities the lessons learned during the 7-day program.
The new workshop will be taught for the first time early this October by certified midwives from the United States - and possibly from Mexico - to approximately 30 men and women, representing 4 Achuar associations from the provinces of Morona Santiago and Pastaza, in the community of Yuvints.
