The purpose of the Jungle Mamas project is to empower the indigenous women and communities of the Ecuadorian rainforest by creating self-sustaining programs to ensure safe birthing and the well-being of pregnant women and newborns. After a very successful pilot program in July 2007, Margaret Love, Founder and Director of the project, and two nurse midwives will return to offer the first-ever Home Based Life Saving Skills course to 18-20 Achuar women and men in Puyo from August 3-15. Kay Sandberg is the fourth member of the team. This course will train participants from various Achuar communities to be "Master Trainers" of others throughout the territory. The goal is to save as many lives as possible of vulnerable pregnant women and infants. The teaching materials use a globally tested, community-based approach to maternal-infant health and education. Our heartfelt thanks to all who have made this breakthrough training possible through your financial and moral support. There will be a full trip report in upcoming New Moon Updates.
