On May 24th, Fundación Pachamama organized a seminar in the Galápagos Islands to educate and prepare judges, lawyers, authorities and civil society organizations for effective implementation of rights of nature jurisprudence. The seminar was a step toward building a regulatory framework consistent with Ecuador's new constitutional provision recognizing "Rights of Nature."
The Galápagos were an emblematic setting for the gathering—being one of the most biodiverse places on earth, home of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and a symbol of conservation around the world.
Nine different groups supported and attended, representing the Galápagos province and National Park as well as key environmental and civil society organizations working in the area.
A special session explored how rights of nature provisions in the law could be leveraged to combat shark-fin fishing. Current law and regulation have proven ineffective in halting a practice that is exceedingly cruel to sharks and destroys entire marine eco-systems.
Fundación Pachamama kicked off the proceedings with an Awakening the Dreamer Symposium.
The seminar was a part of the work of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature to promote and implement a new jurisprudence system in Ecuador that will serve as a global model.
