Organizing efforts require a lot of communication, and now, you can help facilitate them for indigenous communities in the Amazon by making an in-kind donation of your old iPod Touch or iPhone 3 to 4. Here's why it's urgent, and how phones would make a difference in the rainforest:
- The management and collaboration between federations representing indigenous nationalities in the Amazon basin is a top priority in light of the prospective oil development plans Ecuador has scheduled for this fall.
- Indigenous leaders are spread all over the Amazon basin, distances are large, and transportation is strenuous, slow or very expensive.
- Your old iPod Touch, iPhone 3 to 4 can bridge that gap with a new technology using satellite connection. That way, the leaders of federations can coordinate and organize themselves more efficiently.
The land in question for oil development is home to six different indigenous nations who have not been consulted appropriately nor given their consent for this project, and it is sandwiched between two of the largest ecological and human rights disasters in recent history.
The advocacy arm of The Pachamama Alliance together with numerous others organizations and influencers are partnering with these indigenous nations to defend their rights. Donating your old phone is something really easy and tangible you can do to join this partnership.
